Summary of 2023 & 2024 Suicide-Related Emergency Department Visits and Deaths
In February 2024, the overall rate of suicide-related ED visits was significantly lower than the previous three-year average.
In 2023:
- Residents of Rutland, Bennington, and Windham Counties experienced significantly higher rates of suicide-related ED visits compared to the rest of Vermont, and residents of Grand Isle, Lamoille, and Addison Counties experienced a significantly lower rate of suicide-related ED visits.
- The rate of suicide death in Vermont was similar to previous years.
- Males had a suicide death rate 3.8 times higher than females.
- Vermonters ages 25-44 and 65+ had a significantly higher suicide death rate.
- Residents of Orleans and Windham Counties experienced a significantly higher rate of suicide deaths compared to the rest of Vermont, and residents of Chittenden County experienced a significantly lower rate of suicide deaths.
