Syphilis is a sexually transmitted infection (STI) that can have a serious impact on a person’s health if left untreated. It is relatively easy to cure when the right medication is used, especially when detected early. Because many symptoms of this infection mimic other illnesses, a blood test is the best way to know if you have syphilis. We can help ensure that your medical provider has access to the right medication if you should test positive for syphilis.
The number of reported cases in our state is extremely low in comparison to the rest of the U.S., but some Vermonters are more at risk for syphilis than others. Any sexually active person can get syphilis through unprotected vaginal, anal or oral sex. If you are a man who has sex with men, a person living with HIV infection, or someone whose partner has tested positive for syphilis, you should get tested. People should be tested for syphilis during pregnancy and before delivery because syphilis can have major health impacts on a baby.
We can help Vermonters with syphilis understand their diagnosis and treatment. On a free and voluntary basis, the Health Department can assist people diagnosed with syphilis to notify their sexual partners and link these partners to testing or treatment.
