Tobacco use is the #1 preventable cause of death.

Tobacco and nicotine harm everyone. In fact, the use of tobacco contributes to four of the top five causes of death in Vermont.

Countless other lives, including those of friends and family members, are impacted by the negative effects of tobacco use and secondhand and thirdhand smoke or vape emissions. Our team at the Vermont Tobacco Control Program is dedicated to reducing this burden through work at the individual, community, and policy levels.

When tobacco is referenced on this website, we are referring to commercial, for-profit tobacco that is produced for habitual use and not the sacred and traditional tobacco that may be used for ceremonial or medicinal purposes by some American Indian communities.
