We support community partners to reduce exposure to secondhand smoke. According to the Youth Risk Behavior Survey, our high school students are exposed to secondhand smoke at alarming rates. When the survey was conducted in 2015, 49% of Orleans County high schoolers reported having been in a room with someone smoking within the previous week. With increased availability of e-cigarettes, it’s more important than ever that we do all we can to prevent our young people from starting smoking, as well as educating everyone about the health hazards of being exposed to secondhand smoke.

Community partners work to help change the tobacco point-of-sale environment by working with community retailers to decrease or eliminate the impact that the sales, visibility and advertising of tobacco have on smoking initiation in local youth.

In 2016, Healthworks ONE hosted a “Smoke Free Places” community forum, beginning a community conversation about limiting smoking near locations such as school bus stops. For more information, visit the coalition’s Facebook page, Orleans Northern Essex Prevention Partnerships.

CounterBalance is a campaign directed towards the tobacco industry’s influence on youth and the damaging impact tobacco use has on community health.

Smoking rates in Vermont are declining, but they remain higher in some groups. Learn more about how we provide services and supports to those with the highest rates of smoking and tobacco use.
