Growing Awareness of Arthritis in Vermont 

The Health Department tracks arthritis among people in Vermont and creates data reports to increase awareness about arthritis and the burden it causes to those who have it to assist the Vermont Arthritis Program, state government and local organizations in making data-driven decisions for arthritis management. 

Key Points

  • With a prevalence of 29%, arthritis is the most common chronic disease among Vermont adults.
  • There are significant disparities in arthritis prevalence among Vermont residents. Adults 65 and older, women, those in lower income households, and who have a disability are more likely to have arthritis.
  • Two-thirds (66%) of Vermont adults with arthritis have had a health care provider suggest physical activity or exercise to help with their arthritis or joint symptoms. 

Arthritis Data & Reports

Adults who are physically active are significantly less likely to experience severe joint pain.
The rate of arthritis- related severe joint pain increases with number of risk factors for social isolation.
Lifestyle limits due to arthritis are significantly higher among adults in households with lower income.
